Obituary

Rev. Vernon B. Collins, age 94 of Englewood, passed away Friday, October 31, 2014 in his residence. He was born in Yuma, Colorado on January 17, 1920 the son of Archie & Amanda (Hammons) Collins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in World War II in Europe in the 87th Division 347th Infantry Regiment under General George S. Patton. He was involved in many battles including D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home he was called to the ministry where he stayed for the past 62 years. He pastored numerous churches in the Dayton area over that time including the New Life First Church of God where he retired in 2012 after 19 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Sally B. (Turner) Collins, 2 daughters Gwen and Dan Kegley and Janet and Dan Hart, 5 grandchildren Jesse & Melanie Fugate, Jeff and Anji Kegley, Kyle and Shannon Day, Melissa and David Ellison, and Andres and Scott Hall, 14 great grandchildren, a sister Pat and David Thaxton, sister-in-law Sylvia Collins and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons Vernon Lee Collins and Walter "Fred" Day Collins, a granddaughter Danise Kegley, 4 brothers Delbert, Clifford, Kenneth and Junior Collins, and 3 sisters Lavawn Frisby, Jean Fugette and Wanda McKenzie. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of the Miami Valley for their care, compassion and friendship during this difficult time.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, November 3, 2014 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm in the Blessing Funeral Home, 11900 N. Dixie Dr., Tipp City. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Pastor Steve Hagerman of the New Life First Church of God and Pastor Gerald Rudd from Greenville, Tennessee officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Tipp City. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Vernon''s memory to the Hospice of the Miami Valley, 46 N.
