Obituary

Walter M. Melloncamp of Butler Township, Dayton, age 92 passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2010 in Miami Valley Hospital. He was born in Brownstown, Indiana on March 18, 1918 the son of Louis and Ida Melloncamp. He resided in that area throughout high school. He had an interest in aviation. In 1940 he participated in a Non-College pilot training from which he received a private pilot license. In January 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His service during World War II included stations in the continental United States, North Africa and Italy as a crew member on cargo aircraft. He received an Honorable Discharge from the service in October 1945. He married Myrtle Wiegand in 1947, and at the same time enrolled in Purdue University using the GI Bill of rights for a degree in Air Transportation in June of 1951. He then began his Civil Service career employed with the U.S. Air Force Logistic Command at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio working in the Maintenance Requirements Division of the Material Management Deputate. Among the awards received were two Meritorious Civilian Service Awards, an upper level award presented to government employees. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and was now a member of the St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 5040 Rye Drive, Huber Heights, Ohio 45424. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Myrtle (Wiegand) Melloncamp, daughter Nadiene Brooks and son-in-law Gary Brooks of Union, Ohio, son Kevin Melloncamp of Key West, Florida, 3 grandchildren Leah Good and husband Ian Good of Vandalia, Steven Brooks currently serving in the U.S. Army and Mark Brooks of the Dayton area, 3 great grandchildren Tabitha Wells, Charles Good, and Ingrid Good, a sister Wilma (Melloncamp) Hinnefield and brother-in-law Lynn Hinnefield of Brownstown, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Curtis Melloncamp and sister-in-law Catherine Melloncamp. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 from 5-8 pm in the BLESSING FUNERAL HOME, 11900 N. Dixie Dr. Tipp City, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 5040 Rye Drive, Huber Heights, Ohio 45424 with Pastor Dennis L. Dobbins officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Tipp City. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Walter''s memory to the St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 5040 Rye Dr. Huber Heights, Ohio 45424.
